Pre-load is basically ride height, you should increase it to help take up the extra weight of course which will help, but if bottoming out adjust the compression damping too.

There's quite a few cheap aftermarket ones on ebay. If you measure up you may find one of them fits nicely. At around 30-40 quid a pop might be worth trying as that's quite a saving over OEM. Either that or try scrap dealers.

Again I'd say you're at risk of overcomplicating things. If you cut the pipe out (in blue) and open up the yellow part, then you've got the effect you want. The gases can potentially go through the pipes marked in red, but they then have nowhere to go, so form a sort of natural barrier anyway...

Yeah as a bit of a hobby welder myself I was taking it easy and found just making loads of overlapping tack welds rather than trying to get a constant bead going worked well for me. Probably would look awful to a pro, but as the old saying going, a grinder and paint, makes me the welder I 'aint ;)

Must admit having a centre stand is the ideal solution - having one on the Tracer is great for general maintenance and cleaning. Doesn't affect ground clearance either - have always caught the pegs first so I know it's fine there ;)

Do you have a trolley jack or similar? At a push you can get someone to lean the bike over on the side stand to lift the rear wheel off, but it's tricky and precarious.
