I pointed out to my dealer at the first service that the cam chain tensioner had been superseded by Yamaha, they had a listen and ordered the new part there and then.

Took about a month for the part to arrive, during which it go so bad that the bike sounded like a black hack.

Replaced a few hundred miles ago and everything's been fine since.

I had the same scenario...mentioned it in passing while we were stood chatting in the workshop and the next thing I know...my service manager was booking the bike in to have it changed and had already Ordered the superseded part...has been sounding as it should ever since it was replaced... 800 miles ago...

Mines been changed this morning for the updated part, excellent no messing service as usual.

Expensive visit though, went there with my son and ended up buying him a one year old XT660 with 1200 miles on it.

Sooo, as regular readers may recall... my cam chain tensioner was replaced yesterday by my dealer, just been out and started Monty up and all is well, no noises anymore, mine wasn't a real bad one, simply a ticking/rattling at cruise and on the overrun until warmed right up. I had a chat to my Yamaha tech guy and tha hex screw inside the cct body is all to do with when you fit it, something about allowing the plunger to move in against the chain?

Started noticing a bit around 800 miles. Now at 1350 mi and it's LOUD from 3.5k to 5k rpm. Calling dealers to try and get it sorted. Dealer I bought it from had it for 1.5 hrs and supposedly couldn't hear it. BS.

Me too, though it's more a cyclical sound than a rattle and it seems to have stopped doing it at all now.3500km

Hi PaulG have you managed to get the new tensioner out of Yamaha NZ yet, mine has just started to rattle after 3000km and despite emailing dealer have herad nothing back yet.

Cheers

this poll alone suggests that over 50 percent have had problems surely Yamaha should replace them all now.

I can not vote, nothing is applicable, Mine rattles until warm, going in tomorrow for new tensioner. they have not adjusted it, nor do they seem to want to try that.

Same here, comes and goes , taking it in tomoro , going to ask them nicely to change the kin thing , or i will be getting all dramatic on the shop floor

Hi Boro,I have taken the bike to the dealer (Motorcycle Central) to report the sounds.Mike, the mechanic there, heard the sounds and said they are ones he has heard before from Yamaha tensioners.
I specifically told him I was not at the point where it was concerning me,as so far, the noise only happens when cold and as soon as the oil pressure comes up ,goes away ( around 1 minute ).If it gets to the point where it doesn't stop after warm up,I will go back.I might also ask to listen to a demo bike to compare sounds.
This sound I get is not a tick or a rattle.

oh great, cam chain rattles! my ER6's come back from being serviced sounding like theyre gonna blow up as i have to let Thai fuqtards work on them.on the last service i had they missed the oil filter off and the new oil was black and on min right out of the workshop..... i dont think my mt will be lasting very long then?

honestly chap you should see them out there, i took my ER6 to kawasaki to get some preload wound on the TSS rear shock on my bike (its made in thailand and should be spelled T O S S) cos i didnt have a long bar to fit on the adjuster ring. it took 3 'technicians' an hour to adjust it. they took it off the bike (?) and then 1 stood on it while the other 2 chased it around on the floor trying to turn the adjuster. in the end i ordered them to put it back on and get out the way while i found a bit of tube and wound a few turns on the spring...............i cried when they did the 12000 service a year later.
i dread to think what will happen if the MT gets warranty problems..........
