Insurance cost

Having read on Adventure Rider how the US are having to pay a premium for the bike insurance on their FZ-09 I thought I'd better check what the UK price is going to be !

My online quote came back at £200, which is a hike of £90 over the 2005 FZS1000 Fazer I just sold for £2k. I think that is quite reasonable for something that is worth £5k more !

Any more UK prices in comparison ?

Mine was £153 fully comp with carole nash, with no voluntary excess, only £300 compulsory. 5 years ncd (max bennets show)
Quire happy with that, but my FZ6 was £63 fully comp, and before that I had a multi bike policy for R1 & ZX636R for £120 (fire & theft)
I'm 43, 20 + years continous riding, and live in low crime area

That's a good price steve, I also used CN for the online quote, I've 30yrs experience, never had a claim, 4 years older than you, qualified advanced rider, I loaded it with immobilizer and a monster chain and lock for discount and valued the bike at £7295. It must be a postcode thing, or you live in an underground bunker 50 miles from your nearest neighbour :p

I think it mostly depends on where they have taken a hit in the previous period.
If your stats hit that pain point criteria, they don't want to under write the risk.
(like me, 55 year old 'born again biker'. CN quoted £570. I believe I am way up there on their 'Do not touch with a barge pole' list lol.)
But there will be another company that didn't take that loss on your particular demographic and they will take you on.
Im currently getting quotes for my daughters first car (sorry, yes car ) Typically quotes are £1500+ But Tesco will do it for sub £500 :))

I'm on £223 with 17 years experience, but do usually around 10k miles a year as well.
Oh, and my postcode is not one that can drag any insurance down... ;)

Lucky you all! My insurance cost me £1200 for 15 months (would've been 12 but they recalculated something and gave me a discount).

It is my first big bike though so I guess I should be pretty happy with that. Only passed my CBT back in August :)

Jeez!! Respect mate!!!

Funny enough my quote for Triumph Street Triple R was £860, which is a rather similar bike. I was hoping that MT-09 would be close but I guess the 175cc add half a grand to the premium...

In my case I have everything you can have against your odds:
  • I live in East London, which isn't really the nicest or safest area
  • I am a new rider (only 2 months of riding experience)
  • it is a powerful, large capacity bike
  • I'm also using it for commuting

I realised that insurance companies are oftentimes simply taking the p**s after quoting on multiple comparison sites for days and days.
Like, the quote for the initial bike I wanted - GSX-R750 - was £7500 per year! :D Same for CBR600R, Daytona and the likes. I mean, really? More than the bike is worth? That's just not serious.

That's why £1200 now feels like a cheap insurance to me :D I just hope it will be going down significantly over the next few years.

Wow!! Guess we don't have much to complaint about !
Usually CIA is good for new riders - who did you go with?

Aviva quoted me £3000, Carole Nash £2000 but only if I keep it in a garage (which I don't have). Called up MCE and they said £1200. They usually have the £950 excess but I decided to go for it hoping that I don't have to claim anything in this year. Called them up, got the reference number and headed to the shop the next day to sign the papers. Came home and called them again to pay and the guy decided to recalculate something and came up with a quote which had some excess cover meaning that my excess would be £0, would cost me £4 less and would last for 15 months instead of 12. I couldn't say no just because I wanted the bike so much.

It's almost like an extortion. You can get what you want but only if you pay us a huge amount of money. Luckily I can afford it otherwise I'd have to go for something sensible, like XJ6 :)

I paid £138 with CN. Couldn't get a quote from Bennett's - not on their list!! Bloody useless! Only paid £105 for my Blackbird last year but was worth a lot less. I'm 60 and have 9 yrs ncd. Have to say the MT is a lot easier to ride than the bird although I do agree that the throttle is snatchy, even in B mode.

Have just insured my MT today for the first full year policy since I got it.

My old policy with Bikesure on a 2008 FZ6 S2 Fazer was £205 last year with 1 year no claims. They wanted £560 to insure the MT this year with 2 year no claims so I told them to bog off.

I went through The Bike Insurer and got quoted £302 with MCE Insurance and bought it on line so ended up only about £100 more than my Fazer 600 and I don't think that's too bad.

The annoying thing is that when I rang to cancel with Bikesure they offered to beat my MCE quote so I told them to bog off again as it winds me up that they could have insured me for around £300 but they wanted to charge me £560. Insurance companies are all robbing gits in my opinion.

I had all this with mine. Ended up cancelling and going Back to someone who gave me a much better price. Will never allow automatic cover with existing insurers-no loyalty!

My insurance is £750 with 3 years no claims. but i am only 20, so that sort of makes sense. A bit more than what i wanted to pay but i really wanted an MT.

That's one heck of a chunk of money for riding a bike Matty, where did you get your bike from with you being in Nottm ?

By the sounds of it, it sounds a fair price, when taking the engines size and your age into consideration.
My first quotes was £600+, but that was before the bike was released :)
Ended up with a quote of £240 with CIA Insurance, who initially quoted £1500 online "due to unknown model", so a phonecall sorted that out.

However, never let your insurance renew automatically. Always call in to refuse renewed, then hang up. Call in again to their sales department to ask for new insurance. It's stupid, but "new" customers earn more discounts. Loyalty is not worth the ink on the paper in the insurance world, sadly.

I know its a lot, but that seems to be the norm for anything i insure these days. my car costs nearly a grand to insure with a grand excess on top of that, saying that though, had a quote on a GSR 600 for less than £200 fully comp. so engine size does play a huge part. Ordered my bike from CMC Nottingham. only 10 mins down so its really handy.

It's easier for me to get to CMC Clay Cross than fight my way into town, plus they have the cafe which does very nice chips !

I've popped in today and got a rather nice discount off some luggage for the bike (my Mrs bought me a crimbo prezzie) because my bike is from them.

If you don't ask you don't get

My bike is still sat in their showroom in front of the KR rep, waitng for the new year to register it.
