MT-07 Exhaust Sound & Essential Mods

I'm not sure but don't actually think not having a cat is an mot failure
Can anyone confirm this either way ?

I'd be more concerned about my insurance company looking to wriggle out of a payout if the bike ended up being thrown down the road.

"Sorrry Mr policy holder but upon inspection it appears your bike was not road legal, therefore your policy is void.".. ….

Can anyone say with absolute certitude that would not happen?

Emissions are not tested, find a friendly MOT station and they won't bother about the exhaust stamp either, as long as its not in an unsafe condition. Insurance companies don't care whether or not an aftermarket exhaust is fitted, AS LONG AS YOU TELL THEM, usually they won't load the policy unless there is a 5% plus power gain, even if they do it would probably only be a few ££. Some say no extra charge, but in the event of damage/theft they will only pay out on standard equipment.
Carol Nash will insure just about anything, for example, my trailer is valued at £2500, they won't cover it for at fault damage or theft, but will pursue a non fault or third party claim.
If you do mod your bike, be honest and upfront and shop around

On the Street triple, the optional 3-1 arrow system says, etched on the can "not for road use"

Now I know insurance firms don't care if you tell them you've got a race can on and it equates to less than 5% power increase....but....

How confident would you be when you've had a contentious accident and the bike was taken away and waiting for insurance appointed inspectors to check it over....bearing in mind their job, amongst others is to look for ways to not pay out?

The Akrapovic full system is different as it's legal with the optional cat.... So possibly does not have such text on it. Still not sure how relaxed I'd be, perhaps a smart-arse inspector might be on call that day?

Getting insurance with all declared is one thing. If the unthinkable happens, it's another getting total peace of mind if there's an element of doubt.

So what if you told your insurance that you had the full Akrapovic system and it was sans the cat .....would the insurance company insure you? No.

If they won't insure you with full disclosure, they won't pay out if they subsequently find out you've lied to them....will they?

Yes, we can be sneaky....that's not my point.

Just my thoughts, FWIW.

Insurance companies have two main concerns when it comes to mods, does it increase the performance, does it make more attractive to theft. Whether or not a cat is fitted has no bearing on either of these two points. If the Akra system is 100% road legal it will have to comply with euro 3 legislation which means it cant exceed 80db, what would be the point of spending hundreds of pounds on a system that offers nothing over the standard one? Removable baffles allow manufacturers the E stamp their products, but I think that loophole is to be closed in the next round of euro 4 or 5 regs.
I have personal experience of making a claim on a bike with an exhaust that's clearly marked "not for road use" without issue. My current bike has the TOR can and is marked not for road use, its declared to the insurance and they are happy, so is the MOT inspector. At the end of the day its down to the individual, and what they want, all I say is declare it to your insurance company, if they accept it and offer you a policy they cannot withdraw it in the event of a claim, as they knew it was fitted. So go on, make some noise :D

Interesting. There was a huge debate about this over on a uk based Street triple forum...when I owned a STR.

So you told your insurance company you were riding a bike with a can that said not for road use on it, they said ok, insured you and subsequently paid out... After what, an accident that was non-fault, your fault or something else like theft? Which insurance company did/do you use?

Sorry to ask all the questions....you see, I would LOVE to go the non-cat, nice full system route as it felt loads better on my old STR, but the uncertainty of being fully covered was untenable for me in the end.

Many thanks

Darren

It was a big lump of metal that was kicked up by the bike in front, if it hit me on the head it would of probably killed me, as it was it hit the front of the bike, went clean through the fairing and damaged some wiring. That was on a Sprint ST insured with Carol Nash. I now have a Tiger 1050 which I bought new with the Triumph race can fitted from day one, told the insurance that it was fitted and gave them the part number etc, no problem and no change in premium. If you go for online quotes, most companies have a page where you can list mods and a sports/race can always seems to be an option. To be honest I haven't shopped about for a few years as I like the policy that Carol Nash offer, plus they don't have an issue with towing a trailer, which I need.

If in doubt ask your insurance and see what they say. If they say no, phone about and find someone who will say yes. One thing about insurance is that its very personal, it depends a lot on the bike, age of rider, driving history, convictions etc. So whats acceptable for one person might not be offered to another

Carol Nash were one of the most expensive last time I got quotes.... By quite a lot too as I recall.

I'll give it a go as you suggest with various companies.....41 years old, riding since I was 16, full licence since 1995. So a fair amount of experience.

Ps, you say you quoted the part number....did you also declare the pipe actually says not for road use on it?....after all, this is what the inspector will see when looking over said, damaged bike.

Cheers

LeoVince coming soon !

Good with more options to choose from. Not impressed by the way they have welded this one, looks like crap to me. And the picture of the complete bike looks like a poor photoshop job. What is it with some companies, don't they understand the importance of first impression? Akra looks so much more profesisonal -- you get what you pay for?

Yep , that is true . Now it looks like pre-alfa prototype , hope they make some changes because they always make quality products .

I have akrapovic fitted without cat or silencer on my
race blue mt07 and it sounds awesome sets off car alarms gives me tinnitus
Not joking! That sound relay hits you in the chest .doesn't put engine light on eather :))

I think this is what happened at the leovince factory.. ;-)

Boss: Listen up guys! Yamaha has released a bike called the MT07 and we have to make an exhaust for it! Seems like the standard exhaust sounds like crap.

Workers: But we have no time, we are all busy making nice exhaust systems for other bikes!

Boss: Good point.. didn't think of that.. eh.. just build a box of sheet metal and weld some tubes to it, the MT-07 is just a cheap commuter bike anyway so.. just make.. eh something simple and carry on with the nice stuff later.

Workers: Yes boss.

Okay, maybe I'm being a bit grumpy.. think I'll have to get some more coffee.. ;-)
